Bridging the Gap Between Airborne and Terrestrial LiDAR: A Unified Approach to 3D Data Collection and Processing

Today, LiDAR is the tool of choice for geospatial professionals seeking accurate, high-resolution 3D data across diverse environments. However, collecting data across aerial, terrestrial, and indoor domains remains technically and operationally challenging. This presentation explores a unified approach to LiDAR mapping that integrates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based scanning, handheld mobile mapping, and cloud-based processing to streamline end-to-end workflows. CHC Navigation will explore how aerial platforms equipped with lightweight LiDAR sensors can rapidly cover large or complex terrains, generating precise point clouds for topographic surveys, infrastructure corridors, and environmental monitoring. Additionally, mobile laser scanners that use a combination of SLAM and GNSS/INS positioning allow for the quick and flexible capture of indoor spaces, urban streetscapes, and GNSS-denied zones with minimal setup and disruption. The real advantage lies in combining these data streams into a single, coherent dataset. Centralized, cloud-based processing environments allow users to fuse aerial and terrestrial LiDAR data, apply trajectory corrections, classify point clouds, and generate final deliverables, such as digital terrain models (DTMs), 3D meshes, and vectorized outputs. Unifying platforms and automating data processing eliminates many traditional pain points, such as disconnected tools, time-consuming file transfers, and inconsistent results. Whether you are mapping a dense urban corridor, scanning building interiors for BIM, or conducting environmental analysis across varied terrain, this session provides insight into how a harmonized LiDAR workflow can transform your data acquisition strategy.

Change Detection from Two Point Clouds

Surveying techniques for large-area mapping such as airborne laser scanner have been used to measure changes via 3D point cloud comparison. We implemented into Terrasolid software module TerraScan an approach for the detection and visualization of 3D topographic change using openly available airborne laser scanning (ALS) data from Finland. This approach is applied to two point cloud epochs (from 2017 and 2021) to identify and analyse changes related to city area — revealing disappearing trees, new buildings, and even small extensions to existing structures. In TerraScan, this process is driven by a special distance-based attribute called "Change", which quantifies differences between new and reference point clouds. This change attribute is computed automatically, stored in the project definition, and visualized using intuitive color schemes—making it easy to spot changes at a glance.TerraScan also offers advanced color mapping to highlight subtle structural differences. For large-area monitoring, multiple TerraBatch instances can run in parallel, dramatically accelerating the change detection process at the project scale at the top speed.

Real-Time CO₂ and District Heating Visualization in a 3D Urban Digital Twin Using GeoAI and Open Geospatial Data

This presentation demonstrates a 3D web application for real-time visualization of CO₂ emissions and district heating demand using GeoAI and open geospatial data. By integrating ALKIS cadastral data, CityGML building models, and infrastructure layers within QGIS and PostgreSQL, the system creates an interactive urban digital twin powered by CesiumJS. A custom-built GeoAI model estimates CO₂ emissions and heating demand at the building level, based on attributes such as usage type, construction year, geometry, and roof structure. Users can update these parameters directly in QGIS or remotely via QFieldCloud, with all changes reflected live in the 3D environment. Buildings are dynamically styled based on their CO₂ output or connection status to the district heating network. Key features: GeoAI-powered estimation of CO₂ emissions and heating demandReal-time data synchronization via Django REST APIsIntegration of ALKIS and CityGML for detailed urban modelingVisualization and planning of district heating networksCross-platform data editing using QGIS and QFieldCloud This demo offers a scalable and open-source approach to building interactive 3D digital twins that support climate-responsive planning, energy infrastructure design, and municipal decision-making.

Simplify the complex with open & interoperable workflows to accelerate your engineering, reality capture, GIS and 3D context needs with Cesium technology.

Users today leverage a variety of products, tools and data to solve increasingly complex problems. Workflows will vary from project to project. Combining a BIM model from tool 1, civil engineering data from tool 2, reality capture from tool 3, GIS data from tool 4 and 3D context from tool 5 becomes even more complex. Using open standards, like OGC 3D Tiles, and interoperable tools, like open visualization clients, simplify these complex data wrangling workflows to accelerate value for the Community. Example - HNTB leverages multiple products to design a new bridge or roadway, including Civil3D, Revit, OpenRoads. They use Cesium to bring this data together, along with Google P3DT to create immersive digital twins within Unity and Unreal for their end users. They selected Cesium for Unity and Cesium Unreal as their visualization clients because they are open source and reduced their average project development by 70% If we want to ensure we continue making the complex simple for developers & users within the 3D and Geospatial communities, openness and interoperability of data and software will be the keystone. https://cesium.com/blog/

The Unlikely Surveyor: High-Accuracy Mapping with Consumer Hardware

The most powerful mobile mapping systems of the next generation are hiding in plain sight. For years, we've overlooked the geospatial potential of the consumer-grade sensors that saturate our daily lives—from the GNSS, IMU, and LiDAR sensors in a smartphone to the integrated cameras of a modern vehicle. This presentation reveals how this ubiquitous hardware can be calibrated and transformed into professional-grade mobile mapping instruments capable of achieving survey-grade accuracy. We will challenge conventional thinking by demonstrating a clear, progressive path from rigorous accuracy assessments of handheld devices to advanced vehicle-based kinematic surveying, all using accessible, off-the-shelf technology. This is the story of how we stop waiting for new tools and start leveraging the geodetic potential of the ones we already have.

Geospatial (gen)AI for smarter Earth Observation

To analyze satellite imagery, draw conclusions and take adequate actions, bare human eyes alone are not enough. Especially when processing large amounts of data (daily terabytes from satellites). To navigate this complexity, Artificial intelligence brings automation and comes in handy to read images at scale and to quickly extract actionable insights. Fully aware of this, and eager to harness artificial intelligence advances for enhanced Earth Observation, Airbus has been proactively developing in-house cutting-edge and bespoke algorithms to address today’s challenges. In brittle times, the multiplication of conflicts and the specter of regional-to-global war expansion have all reinforced the importance of battlefield transparency and tactical intelligence, emphasizing the relevance of Satellite Imagery for Multi-Domain Operations. While ISR teams face difficulties in interpreting satellite imagery to support timely decision-making in high-intensity conflicts, Defence forces have recognized AI as a key enabler to scale up production and to automate the analysis of large-scale multi-source satellite imagery and quickly extract key information for their operations. AI also powers and helps scale up analytics for Environment monitoring: better performance, faster development, tailoring to customers’ needs… Overall it can help identify critical evolutions over time throughout different biomes: deforestation is put under control, vast land cover mapping is performed to detect changes in vegetation and urban expansion, drought conditions are studied, and emission levels can be tracked. AI becomes crucial as climate change and its impacts build up and accelerate, supporting the need for near-real-time applications, anticipation and fast responsiveness. Nowadays, in the wake of the two first AI waves (machine learning and statistical, followed by deep learning and big data) comes a new AI era, heading towards General AI, marked by the generative AI disruption. Indeed, Geospatial companies like us Airbus, with our high quality imagery foresee it as the catalyst for a paradigm shift and a game-changer for Earth Observation, shifting to Earth Exploration, advocating for its democratization and making it accessible for broad communities of end-users, thanks to lower barriers to entry. Imagine, with no technical background needed, asking -in natural language- to look for whatever pattern you have in mind: “find red cars parked along the roadside in a forest”: simple, fast and intuitive, such as starting a conversation with an overhead image, and make them speak to tell their own stories. The whole world, just one prompt away. In a nutshell, AI and genAI’s core technologies (LLM, FM…) can be leveraged for many usages and benefits: to enhance the resolution and visual rendering of satellite imagery such as our Pléiades Neo HD15 images, for quick and scalable mapping, IMINT and analytics solutions, either for Defence or Commercial applications. They should considerably improve the quality of insights derived from satellite data for decision-making. Above all, Airbus values trustworthy and reliable Imagery & Artificial Intelligence to make Earth Observation smarter, more intuitive and accessible for all. For Airbus it is important to highlight that GenAI technologies are never used to generate new content and alter reality. Not forgetting that AI is never the end, but only a mighty catalyst to open a new Geospatial chapter, and to see the world with a fresh new A-EYE!
