The German Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI Germany) is a joint project between the federal government, the states and local authorities for the digital provision and use of spatial data in Germany. The aim of the SDI Germany is to enable access to standardised, interoperable and quality-assured spatial data and services across administrative boundaries – for administration, business, science and the public.
The establishment and further development of the SDI Germany promotes the efficient, transparent and networked handling of spatial information – in line with the National Geoinformation Strategy 2.0.
The SDI Germany thus makes an important contribution to the digitisation of public administration and the implementation of national and European requirements – such as the INSPIRE Directive and the HVD-DVO. The services offered by SDI Germany can support efforts to overcome current social challenges, for example in climate protection, spatial planning or the mobility transition.
The five National Technical Components form the technical backbone of SDI Germany. Geoportal.de is the central access point to the geodata and geodata services in the network. It offers a comprehensive search function for geodata and a wide range of display options for the search results: map content can be combined and displayed together, for example. Finished maps can be downloaded or shared directly on social media.
Other components include Geodatenkatalog.de, the GDI-DE Testsuite, the GDI-DE Registry and the GDI-DE Monitor. These applications support geodata providers in making their geodata and services available.
SDI Germany relies on open standards, uses modern web technologies and cooperates with specialist infrastructures to continuously improve the findability and usability of geodata.
Visit SDI Germany at INTERGEO 2025 as a co-exhibitor at the stand of the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG). Find out about current developments, applications and services – and discover how you can benefit from SDI Germany.
