About
In the research network DiViAS (Digitisation, Visualisation and Analysis of Collection Items), historical sources are analysed, from which, among other things, ship routes are reconstructed. Within the scope of the processing, mainly logbooks are transcribed and subsequently place names, coordinates, dates and times of events, persons, and objects are extracted using Named Entity Recognition. A challenge for the processing and visualisation is the often vague spatiotemporal information in the sources. For the cartographic representation of spatiotemporal uncertainty, the concept of possibility spaces is introduced. A possibility space covers the entire area in which an event could have taken place. This can refer to a geographical space as well as to a period of time. To visually distinguish between the different types and intensities of spatiotemporal uncertainty, various display options are created using visual variables. The visualisations created in the project are to be evaluated and, in perspective, made accessible via web maps.
